BATTERSEA EVOLUTION WELCOMES BRITAIN'S OLYMPIC HEROES FOR THE 2016 TEAM GB BALL

Britain’s Olympic heroes were joined by stars of fashion and entertainment last Wednesday for the 2016 Team GB Ball in Battersea Evolution to celebrate the extraordinary success of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The Team GB Ball helps support the British Olympic Association (BOA) on the journey to future Olympic and Olympic Winter Games including PyeongChang 2018 and Tokyo 2020.

After a gold carpet entrance, guests were greeted at a champagne reception and, in the spirit of the evening’s Brazilian theme, Caiprinhas and apple, elderflower and mint sparkles were also offered.

Pre-dinner entertainment was a selection of stunning performances: Garota de Ipanema, a capoeira display to traditional Brazillian percussion instruments and the breath-taking Samba de Malandro.

With the mood set, the curtain dropped on the main stage and the spectacular Oi Brasil dance troup – an impressive, colourful and energetic showcase of Brazilian dance. Following the routine, Oi Brasil dancers accompanied members of Team GB onto stage for an address by HRH Princess Anne (herself an Olympian and current BOA President) and Chairman, Sir Hugh Robertson.

Guests were then welcomed by co-hosts of the inaugural Team GB Awards: double Olympic medallist Tom Daley and Claudia Winkleman. Claudia and Tom oversaw the presentation of awards, including ‘Team GB’s Ultimate Superfan’ (presented by Panasonic), ‘Great Britain’s Choice’ (voted for by the British public and supported by Aldi), Coach of the Year and ‘Olympian’s Olympian’ (voted for by Team GB’s Rio 2016 Olympians).

Between the awards and an athlete Q&A hosted by broadcaster Charlie Webster, guests were served delicious Brazilian-fusion inspired food from a menu designed by Smart Hospitality for the event. A starter of a smoked duck salad with fig jam and a crispy duck and polenta fritter was followed by an “osso buco style’ braised shin of beef in red wine and vegetables served with risotto Milanese.

Vegetarians were treated to a roast pear and goats cheese tart followed by mushroom-filled gnocchi with pumpkin, tomato and aubergine sauce. To finish off, chocolate ganache served with – Brazilian favourite – dulce de leche salted caramel, yoghurt meringue kisses, blood orange gel, and mandarin sorbet.

The awards dinner finale was a live auction led by auctioneer Jonny Gould, which saw guests bid on once-in-a-lifetime experiences including a Crystal Maze day out with the Team GB Women’s Hockey Team, training with Mo Farah in Oregon and a dinner with Olympic legends.

With the auction brought to a close, Gary Barlow took centre stage for a set including hits Shine and Never Forget before guests hit the dance floor for DJ Andy P and Martin 2 Smoove.
