We spoke to Emma Ollis, Marketing Manager at Battersea Evolution, to get an exclusive look behind the scenes of London's most versatile and dynamic venue...

Tell us a little bit about your venue

Set in the heart of Battersea Park, Battersea Evolution is London’s most versatile and dynamic venue. Designed specifically with events in mind, this purpose-built space can cater for every occasion, from the city’s hottest Christmas parties to corporate conferences and charity dinners.

What’s the ideal-sized event for you to host?

Anything from 600 – 1,500 people. Events for 1,000 people are our sweet spot!

The style and design is certainly amazing! Who designed it and what was the inspiration behind it?

Battersea Evolution originated from our CEO noticing a gap in the market for large-scale events in London. Smart Group then partnered with GL Events Owen Brown, a European specialist in temporary event structures, and Battersea Evolution was born! Initially we were just a temporary Christmas pop-up but now the venue runs for 9 months of the year, de-rigging only during the summer.

What do you love most about being a part of the Smart Venues team?

I love two things the most. Firstly, being part of a dynamic, fun and family-like team and secondly, the different portfolio of events that we host. No two days are the same!

What element of the venue do you consider to be the wow factor?

  1. The location – we’re in the middle of Battersea Park!
  2. The floor-to-ceiling glass frontage of the venue – it looks really special at night with all the lights
  3. The size of the venue and the fact that the main space has no pillars

Any top tips for our readers when it comes to selecting an event venue?

Have an open mind! You never know what you can achieve within a venue. Always give a clear and concise brief too – it’s the best way to get the best deal.

What sets you apart from other London event venues?

Versatility! You can transform the space to suit your needs. With virtually unlimited branding potential, you can make an impact with the entrance as soon as your guests arrive. And once inside the venue, the opportunities are endless – the images we have of the venue speak for themselves…

What kind of catering is available for corporate events?

Whatever you want! Our in-house catering team, Smart Hospitality, create delicious catering experiences crafted and tailored to the style, budget and needs of our clients, combined with immaculate service and attention to detail. Whether preparing elegant canapés for 500, precision dinners for 2,000 or eclectic street food stalls for 5,000, our passionate, creative team of chefs devise dishes your guests will simply love.

Do you have any exciting developments on the horizon that we can share with our readers?

We do have some exciting things happening in our Smart Venues portfolio but we can’t share anything at the moment. We’ll keep you posted…

We can’t wait to hear all about it! Tell us about one of the most creative events that’s been held at one of your venues.

That has to be our Christmas parties! Each year, we completely transform the venue with a different theme, and this year it’ll be Around the World in 80 Days. Last year the theming was Après, which included fur-lined seats, alpine-themed catering, roaring log fires, magnificent fir trees, alpine bars and thick fur throws. We also brought in 4 ski gondolas from Austria that hung from the ceiling and sprinkled snow on arriving guests!

Sounds epic! What would you say are the key elements required to deliver a successful event?

A well-oiled operations team. They are the heart of our venue and we are so lucky to have an experienced operations team who are behind the great events that we deliver.

What would be the perfect event for your venue’s setting?

A creative and large-scale production dinner.

If Battersea Evolution were a person, past or present, who would they be?

Greg Lawson, the CEO of Smart Group. He’s been the driving force behind Battersea Evolution, and the Group, since its inception. He is versatile in that his experience spans the whole industry – venues, Christmas parties, catering, event management, corporate hospitality… He really has done it all. Plus he’s done it at scale, which is without a doubt how you’d describe Battersea Evolution and the events it hosts.

What is the Battersea Evolution mantra/philosophy you live by, or quote that sums you up best?

We believe in the power of bringing people together through events.
