Serial entrepreneur Richard Branson once said: “If you look after your staff, they will look after your customers”. This philosophy seems obvious, however while most businesses have a robust strategy to ensure their customers remain content, the same does not always apply to their staff. For a company to survive and thrive, it’s essential senior management recognises the importance of an employee engagement program. This can be showcased in a multitude of ways, from offering staff additional paid leave, company away-days, recognition, internal promotions, equity based schemes and reward based incentives to name a few.
Corporate events or away-days which take place outside the office, is a tried and tested method in generating camaraderie and togetherness amongst employee’s in a controlled, relaxed and fun environment. Spending time with colleagues away from the office can also help people improve and enhance relationships amongst their peers. This ultimately leads to greater productivity, increased efficiency and staff retention within the workplace, as employees have a new sense of belonging and respect for their colleagues.
Smart Live organised a two day incentive conference for Danone, at The Grand Hotel in Brighton, the mantra was ‘everyone counts’ and ‘the small things matter’. The primary purpose of the conference was for employee’s to think differently in an interactive and immersive environment. Also, to make them feel engaged and valued as individuals. The company wanted to inspire their employee’s to unleash their individual and collective potential, to help deliver their roadmap through 2016 and beyond. Smart Live organised such activities as: Dinner with circus and burlesque acts, indulgent spa treatments, a chocolate and pasta making course, zorb football, and a Brighton pier experience. Each incentive brought people together, enabling them to feel relaxed and part of a company that genuinely appreciates them. Each delegate was given a courtesy room upgrade and a generous goodie bag to ease any hangover!

Events are a great way for businesses to showcase a different side of its corporate personality, whilst delivering their key messaging to their employee’s. Corporate events need to be imaginative and thought provoking, yet reflect a company’s core values. Gone are the days of sitting in a seismic conference hall gazing at endless PowerPoint presentations, a corporate away day usually includes team bonding activities such as go-karting, quad biking, ten pin bowling to group cooking lessons. Offering employee’s a life enhancing experience can reap rewards for a company, so it goes without saying that these type of endeavours should be championed from the top down.
In today’s 24/7, always-on world, corporate events can provide the opportunity for people to get away from the stresses of the office and absorb a new experience in an immersive, informative and engaging environment. The R.O.E (return on events) far outweighs the cost implications associated with an event, as staff will most likely leave invigorated and inspired, you can’t put a price on that.
